• Explain the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) and the seven stages of cognitive decline according to the GDS.
• Analyze cognitive considerations and strategies in rehabilitation
• Discuss strategies to adapt physical therapy interventions based on cognitive function.
• Explore ways to improve communication and engagement with patients experiencing cognitive decline.
• Understand appropriate physical therapy interventions for each stage of dementia.
• Identify strategies to enhance patient function, safety, independence, and quality of life.

Nicole Lavoie, PT, DPT is a seasoned physical therapist and clinical leader with extensive experience in dementia care and education. With over three decades in clinical practice, program development, and regulatory compliance, Nicole has spearheaded initiatives to enhance rehabilitation strategies for individuals with cognitive impairment. As a former Clinical Director at Genesis Rehab Services and Clinical Specialist Manager at Ageility, Nicole has developed and implemented evidence-based dementia management programs for use in skilled nursing, assisted living, and independent living environments. A recognized speaker and educator, Nicole has presented at national conferences on the role of rehabilitation in dementia care and has contributed to interdisciplinary education on cognitive screening, intervention strategies, and patient-centered care. Passionate about advancing dementia care within rehabilitation settings, Nicole continues to advocate for best practices through mentorship and professional collaboration.
